Taipei's New Construction Office Honored with 2025 Excellence in Engineering Projects Award by Chinese Institute of Engineers for Liugong Green Corridor Pedestrian Environment Improvement Project
The Liugong Green Corridor Pedestrian Environment Improvement Project, carried out by the New Construction Office under the Taipei City Government’s Public Works Department, received the Excellence in Engineering Projects Award. The recognition was presented during the 2025 Joint Annual Meeting of the Chinese Institute of Engineers and various engineering societies, held on June 6, 2025, at the Excellence Hall, 2nd floor of the Howard Civil Service International House, hosted by the Civil Service Development Institute. The New Construction Office noted that this marks the fifth award recognizing the Liugong Green Corridor, following its previous honors including the Golden Stone Award in the Outstanding Public Construction Planning category at the 31st Chinese Architectural Golden Stone Awards, an Honorable Mention in the Environmental Planning category at the 11th Taiwan Landscape Awards by the Taiwan Institute of Landscape Architects, the Excellence Award at the 24th Public Construction Golden Quality Award by the Public Construction Commission of the Executive Yuan, and the Excellence Award in the Park Green Space/Public Open Space category at the 12th Taiwan Landscape Awards. These accolades underscore the superior quality of this New Construction Office’s project and the continued recognition it has garnered from various sectors. According to the New Construction Office, the Liugong Green Corridor Pedestrian Environment Improvement Project builds upon the successful pedestrian environment enhancements along Sections 1 to 3 of Zhongxiao East Road in Taipei City and the Eastern District Revitalization Plan. The core concept centers on creating a high-quality, people-oriented environment and connecting the green corridors of the Eastern District. The project targets the southern and northern sides of Lane 135, Section 1 of Fuxing South Road, including the central parking lot area. Through connecting the southern road section, adjusting the roadway cross-section layout, and reviewing existing facilities and accessibility, the project introduces a large-scale green plaza into the bustling commercial Eastern District. In addition to the use of permeable pavements, multi-layered green spaces, and newly planted vegetation, the design incorporates scenic lighting elements to evoke the historic image of the Liugong Canal, creating a pedestrian plaza that is people-centric, resilient, and intellectually engaging, thereby improving the overall pedestrian environment. The New Construction Office added that the site of the Liugong Green Corridor Pedestrian Environment Improvement Project is situated behind the prominent Far Eastern SOGO - Taipei Zhongxiao Store in the Eastern District. It connects eastward to Liugong Park and Dinghao Plaza while connecting westward to Liugong Canal Park near Section 1 of Fuxing South Road. Now open to the public, the transformed space offers a comfortable and green pedestrian environment that integrates the Eastern District’s linear green corridor. The project promotes greater pedestrian flow by enhancing the connection between open spaces and the Eastern District’s shopping areas. Beyond benefiting local residents, it also accommodates shoppers, tourists, and commuters, fostering a dynamic streetscape and making the area more walkable. The project has been well received by both local businesses and the community.
