TBS Shilin Transmitting Station Upgrade Saves NT$150,000 in Annual Electricity Costs! The Project Was Honored with a Gold Prize at “FADA 2026”
Taipei Broadcasting Station (TBS)’s “Building High-Resilience Broadcast Stations via EMS and Space Optimization” project was honored with the Gold Prize in the “Sustainable Concept” category at the 2026 Future Art & Design Award UK (FADA), showcasing the station’s outstanding achievements in broadcast infrastructure upgrades and the green energy transition. The “FADA Award” aims to recognize outstanding design and innovative projects worldwide that demonstrate foresight, practicality, and social value. Receiving this international accolade demonstrates that the project has set a global benchmark for excellence across technical logic, social engagement, and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) sustainability. TBS Director Shao-Chien Hu remarked that the award-winning energy-saving control project at the Shilin Transmitting Station marks a major milestone for the station. The engineering team successfully transformed the energy-intensive facility into a highly resilient transmitting station boasting low operating costs. This project not only introduced smart monitoring and energy storage systems but also ensured uninterrupted public broadcasting service during construction, highlighting the station’s strong sense of responsibility and effective execution. TBS further noted that the smart modernization of the transmitting station implemented a pragmatic power management strategy, achieving outstanding energy-saving performance. First, the facility transitioned from a high-voltage to a low-voltage power supply while optimizing and lowering its Taipower contracted capacity. Simultaneously, spatial reconfigurations and a reduced air-conditioned footprint significantly decreased overall power consumption. Furthermore, an energy storage strategy was implemented to charge during off-peak night hours and discharge during daytime peak hours, lowering effective electricity unit costs by approximately 15%. Integrating these three energy management initiatives is estimated to save approximately NT$150,000 in annual electricity costs. This forward-thinking sustainable design not only effectively decreases energy consumption and operational costs, but also ensures the stability of broadcast signals under various emergency situations, significantly enhancing overall operational resilience. This project exemplifies TBS’s commitment to pursuing technological innovation and sustainable development.
