Team Chinese Taipei, which brings together the best players in Taiwan, will play with Ireland and New Zealand for the chance to advance to the top of the group!

The IKF WKC2023 is co-sponsored by the Taipei City Government and the Chinese Taipei Korfball Association. The IKF World Championships is the highest level of Korfball and is held every four years, and the number of teams participating in this competition is the largest ever, with a total of 24 teams, including those from Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and other countries, competing in the same arena in Taiwan. One team from each group will advance to the final eight, and the winner will enter the final four to participate in the final championship and compete for the highest honor.

Korfball was originated in Netherlands in 1902. It is the only mixed-gender sport in the world, where only players of the same sex can play defense, and collisions between male and female players can be avoided; the venue, equipment, and rules of Korfball are similar to basketball, but the pace of the game is much faster. The rules of the game reflect the spirit of teamwork and gender equality, ensuring that both men and women have the opportunity to play together, also keeping the game exciting and intense.

Korfball has been a non-mainstream sport in Taiwan for forty years, but Team Chinese Taipei won a medal at the World Championships as early as 1987, and has continued to excel in the international arena ever since, ranking among the top three in the world in the last decade. In the U17 Korfball World Cup in early July this year, we even beat the Netherlands, the birthplace of Korfball, to win the championship. This time, Team Chinese Taipei has finally come home to play, so let's unite as one and go into the arena to win the game with the Chinese athletes. Let's hope that they can win the World Championships and keep the trophy in Taiwan!

Team Chinese Taipei's first group match will be held on 10/20 (Fri) at 7:15pm against Ireland, and the second group match against New Zealand is scheduled to be held on 10/22 (Sun) at 3:45pm. A total of 28,000 runners gathered to live their new lives in the post-pandemic era. To echo the theme「RUN THE CITY – WE ARE POSSIBLE」, Ko commented, “Taipei Marathon has gone through some rough times since the start of the pandemic, and now that the restrictions are gradually lifted and pretty much returning to the way before, our achievements in promoting Taipei have proved that as long as we are willing, nothing is impossible. Taipei Marathon, as we all know, is an iconic event in Taiwan. We look forward to and hope to see Taipei Marathon here always.”

What is worth mentioning is that Taipei Marathon is the only city marathon in Taiwan certified with "Elite Label" by World Athletics (WA) and the world’s first ever race event with an ISO-14067 carbon footprint certification received from British Standards Institution (BSI).

Elite runners gathered for the year end race competition

Lani Kiplagat Rutto from Kenya crowned champion for full marathon male group with a finish time of 2 hours 09 minutes and 42 seconds. Additionally, Ethiopian runner, Alemtsehay Asefa Kasegn, a defending champion from last year, broke the course record of 2 hours 27 minutes and 36 seconds and won 1st place in full marathon female group with a finish time of 2 hours 25 minutes and 55 seconds. Both Rutto and Lasegn shared their thoughts after the run. They said, “Thank you so much to the organizer for inviting. It was wonderful to see the cleanliness of the streets and how professional the staff and the organization of this event were. The sounds of cheering along the route really pushed us. We hope to be able to come back to this beautiful city of Taipei next year. We promise to come back.”

On the other hand, Taiwanese male runner, Chiang Chieh-Wen won the champion in the domestic group with a finish time of 2 hours 25 minutes and 53 seconds. Female runner, Lisa Ries, finished with 2 hours 40 minutes and 54 seconds, winning 1st place in today’s ranking for women’s full marathon in the domestic group.

Lu Yen-Hsun challenges his first half-marathon

With 20 years of solid training and skills as a professional sports player, Lu Yen-Hsun challenged his first half marathon and finally finished the race in 1 hour 31 minutes 55 seconds. Not even feeling shortness of breath, he said, “Fortunately, I have had enough physical training before. The running distance in a fierce five-set match in tennis could easily add up to nearly 10 kilometers.”

Zhou Xian-Feng in the half-marathon male group finished with his personal best of 1 hour 06 minutes and 58 seconds. All-time 1st place winner Tsao Chun-Yu ran the half marathon and won with a finish time of 1 hour 14 minutes and 17 seconds.

Embracing diversity and keeping event high standards

Taipei City Government Sports Bureau is devoted in promoting friendly races and love for diversity. Wheelchair runners successfully passed the tests of the Zhongshan bridge and McArthur 1st bridge and finished the race within the time limit. These achievements are worthy of 10-week training before the race.

The hosting organizer reviews and collects feedbacks from all parties each year after the event then optimizes the planning and execution in hopes of bettering the scale of the race year after year. What is most praised by the participants this year is that we adjusted the original route of passing Jiankang Road and Sanmin Road to McArthur 1st Bridge instead then straight to the finish line. With two less curves, the runners were able to have a smoother final sprint, making it easier for the runners to have a better time result.

Thank you to all sponsors and supporters

Our grateful appreciation extends to all the sponsors, including Fubon Financial Holdings, adidas, Herbalife, CITIZEN, PaMi Tseng Noodles, Taiwan Mobile, Fubon Insurance, Marathon Expo, JAGUAR TAIWAN, SHOKZ, AROMASE, Synmosa, EVA AIR, ACTife, All Sports, Bravelog, Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical Co., Inc., Maobao, Vitalon Foods Company, Nestle Taiwan, cama, Gigijing, nonstop running podcast and many other partners. The commissioner of department of sports Li, Tzai-Li will be joining the run as a guide runner. “The past three years haven’t been the easiest when it comes to hosting a large event like Taipei Marathon. Thank you to every one of you who persevered and stood by us. Just like our theme this year, RUN THE CITY – WE ARE POSSIBLE, with a positive mindset, there is nothing you cannot conquer.”, said Lee.

As the only city marathon in Taiwan that is certified with Elite Label by World Athletics (WA), Taipei Marathon invited 12 international elite runners to join the race. With various Covid restrictions lifted, runners travelling from the overseas only had to arrive 7 days in advance and conduct self-health management with negative test result from rapid antigen test. It is exciting that we are seeing more and more international participants as life slowly goes back to normal.

Taipei Marathon has always been a year-end test event for domestic elite runners and there’s no exception for this year as well. The men's marathon group led by Chiang, Chieh-Wen、Chou, Ting-Yin. Chiang achieved great efforts in the recent races which he won the double gold medals in 5000-meters and 10000-meters races in May and 10000-meters gold medal in October. Chou, who won the domestic runner champion will face a strong challenge from Chiang to defend his champion title.

Among the entry list of the women's full marathon group, Chang, Chih-Hsuan、Tsai, Yun-Hsuan、Lee, Chia-Mei、Chen, Yi-Ning、Chu, Zhu, Ying-Ying are all regular participants in the competition year after year. Lisa Ries, who broke 3hr in the first of the marathon this year. And also she is actively striving for the opportunity to advance to the Paris Olympics games after training in competitions.

The women's half-marathon group will be led by Hsieh, Chien-Ho and Tsao, Chun-Yu this year. Tsao has just broke her half marathon person best last month in AGEO City Japan, and she’s ready to compete with domestic half marathon record holder Hsieh.

The men's half marathon has been fiercely competitive in recent years. Last year's top four – Lee, Li-Jyun、Huang, Xiang-Wei、Wu, Jui-En、Zhou, Xian-Feng not only created new personal achievements, but also achieve goals of the Chengdu Summer Universiade.

Taipei City Government Sports Bureau is devoted in promoting friendly sports events and love for diversity. For the first time in record, wheelchair racers are encouraged to join in Taipei Marathon for half-marathon race. Considering the safety for first-time wheelchaired participants have finished a 10-week physical fitness training, including long range riverside park route and indoor muscle strength classes so that the wheelchair racers can successfully complete the race.

Certified by the British Standards Institution (BSI) in 2021, Taipei Marathon became the first ever race event with an ISO-14067 carbon footprint verification. Sustainability, therefore, is one of the key measures considered when it comes to what materials are being used for the supplies. It has not been an easy year but remember that sports and exercises help with stress relief. Taipei Marathon organizers are honored and happy to see runners crossing the finish line, symbolizing turning onto a new chapter of life.”, said Mayor Ko.

Taipei Marathon is the only marathon in Taiwan that is certified with an Elite Label by the World Athletics (WA). To meet the requirements of WA label race, the organizers made an all-out effort by inviting 12 top elite runners to join the race in Taiwan. Not only were they responsible to provide a 14+7 quarantine and self-health management hotel stay for each of them, multiple entry, exit, and pre-race medical checks were also executed properly to ensure safety and that they were fit for the race.

Demeke Kasaw Biksegn from Ethiopia crowned champion for full marathon male group with a finish time of 2 hours 11 minutes and 42 seconds. Additionally, Ethiopian runner, Alemtsehay Asefa Kasegn, won 1st place in full marathon female group with a finish time of 2 hours 30 minutes and 44 seconds. On the other hand, Taiwanese female runner, Tsao, Chun-Yu, met the entry criteria for 2022 Asian Games of 2 hours 35 minutes, which will be celebrated in Hangzhou. She finished with 2 hours 33 minutes and 51 seconds, winning 1st place in today’s ranking for women’s full marathon in the domestic group.

Chou, Ting-Yin broke his personal best. According to him, he is especially thankful and happy to have joined such a big race despite various restrictions due to the pandemic. In addition to the beautiful weather today, the changes in the race route were also a big help. He was able to focus on his steps. It felt like running in Japan.

All-time 1st place winner Tsao, Chun-Yu also talked about her performance this year. She said, “I started slow and was a bit conservative in the beginning based on my experience from last year’s race. Although I did not break my personal best record, but to have met the requirement for 2022 Asian Games, I am very happy.”

ISO14067 carbon footprint verification to call for environmental sustainability.
Shortly after the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) last month, Taipei City Government also announced its plan for the 2050 Net Zero Carbon Emission. Taipei City will be advocating the importance of reducing carbon emission in order to achieve the goal of reducing it by 30% in 2030 compared to that of 2005, and eventually, reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. While applying to become the first ever city marathon that holds an ISO-14067 certificate, Taipei Marathon took the lead in taking an action by requesting BSI to conduct the carbon footprint verification for the race event through tracing the hardware equipment, display decorations and materials (compositions), amount, weight, transportation method, and distance used in the event. The carbon emissions recorded by BSI will be used as a reference for future management.

Tennis star & event ambassador Lu, Yen-Hsun cheered for his brother Lu, Wei-Ju.
Lu, Yen-Hsun, five-time tennis player at the Olympic games announced his retirement this year after the Tokyo Olympics. As an ambassador for the Taipei Marathon, he inaugurated the event together with Taipei City Mayor Ko, Wen-Je. Lu plans to run the half marathon next year. He said excitedly, “It’ll be a fun experience to see how it feels like running 21K.”

Continuation of improving event services with high standards.
Part of the race route had been optimized compared to the previous years. The curved and narrow sections of the riverside park were adjusted to reduce physical exertion and speed increase, so that the runners could head towards the finish line with ease.
There was also a slight change in the finish line area where there was a prolonged distance for all finishers to enjoy the deserving sounds of the applause and crowd cheering. Live broadcast cameras were set up to capture the runners reaching the finish line and projected onto the big screens on the sides of Taipei Stadium. Floor sections in the audiences’ area were also available to sign-up before the event day for close family and friends to cheer for their loved ones.
Hot noodle stands were also set up at the venue available for finishers to enjoy and energize for free on a cold day. In addition, runners in the full marathon category received a limited-edition windbreaker jacket and nutritional lunch boxes designed specifically for the runners.
Despite the spreading of the pandemic all over the world, last year’s Taipei Marathon was successfully held with high standard epidemic prevention measures. According to the report by World Athletics (WA), 2020 Taipei Marathon was the world’s largest mass sports event since the pandemic started. In compliance with the pandemic prevention protocols, all entrances and exits of the site were equipped with infrared thermometers, handheld forehead thermometer and antibacterial cleaning sprays for the public to use. At the same time, 30,000 medical masks were prepared at the finish line, allowing each finisher to put on a new mask when the race was over.

The renowned event services are achieved with the help of all supporters.
2021 Taipei Marathon has attracted many enterprises in becoming the biggest supporters of the runners. In response to global warming and to reach the goal of “Net Zero by 2050”, Taipei Marathon has invited British Standard Institution (BSI) to conduct carbon footprint verification for the race, hoping to achieve the goal of reducing carbon emissions by 3% annually.

As the number of race events has decreased drastically since the outbreak of the pandemic, Taipei Marathon will be learning from the successful experience last year by adopting the highest level of pandemic prevention measures. This includes requiring all participants, event staff, and volunteers to provide a health certificate prior to the race, passing the temperature screening before entering the venue, and always having a face mask on. Runners are permitted to remove the mask once the race has started. The organizer staff will then provide a brand-new mask for the runners after passing the finish line.

ISO14067 carbon footprint verification to call for environmental sustainability.

Shortly after the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) last month, Taipei City Government has also announced its plan for the 2050 Net Zero Carbon Emission. Taipei City will be advocating the importance of reducing carbon emission in order to achieve the goal of reducing carbon emission by 30% in 2030 compared to that of 2005, and eventually, reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The carbon emissions recorded by BSI will be used as a reference for future management.

The actual actions taken to reduce plastic and carbon include the use of recyclable and naturally decomposable materials on the packaging of the adidas race singlet, the use of CircuWell non-plastic paper cups at the water and supply stations, the use of recycled stones for the trophies, as well as the electronic finish certificate, the finisher towels reduce the use of plastics, and the use of electric power motorcycle to replace gasoline motorcycle etc. In addition, Fubon Financial Holdings, the top sponsor of this event, also launched the "Run For Green" initiative, collaborating with not only Taipei Marathon., but also other iconic races. We are expecting to have 100,000 trees planted across Taiwan within the next 5 years. As a global citizen, environmental conservation is our duty. Come and join us!

National Games Elites fight for success

Representing Taipei City, Hsieh Chien-Ho, Fu Shu-Ping, and Chang Chih-Hsuan did a fantastic job in the National Games in the women’s marathon category. Lai Yi-Ting and Tsai Cheng-Hsuan, were also outstanding in men’s marathon category. The local elites will be running the Taipei Marathon. So are Tsao Chun-Yu, the record holder in women’s marathon in Taiwan, and Lee Chi-Ju, champion of 1,500 meters in National Games.

In addition to the participation of domestic elite runners, the organizer has also invited 12 foreign elite runners to participate in the race in accordance with the regulations of the World Athletics (WA) label certification event. All international runners will need be quarantined and tested with a negative result. Oleksandr Sitkovskyi from Ukraine participated in Taipei Marathon last year. Unfortunately, he only ran an unsatisfactory result for 2 hours 20 minutes and 40 seconds. He is visiting Taipei again after a year, hoping to challenge his personal best of 2 hours 9 minutes and 11 seconds.

There are also two familiar faces in the women’s marathon elite list. The activity began at the Dajia Riverside Park on November 6th (Saturday). The Taipei City Government Department of Sport has developed water activities in Taipei City to encourage the public to get close to the water, experience the water, love the water, and respect the water. Each summer, the city organizes water activities for the Crazy Summer Water Fun Event. In today’s final round of advanced “Canoe Self-Challenge” activity, Commissioner Li Tzai-li of the Taipei City Government Department of Sports kicked off the challenge with a shrill blast of the whistle. Participants in the 30 two-person canoes launched off from under the Dazhi Bridge in Dajia Riverside Park and paddled all the way to the final destination in SanjiaoduWharf.

This activity was fully booked within two minutes after registration opened. Many of the teams were made up of families and friends. Some were members of dragon boat teams and even seniors who have been participating for many years in beginning level water activities. Some have even participated in all phases of this year’s events, including die-hard fans of the beginner experience this summer and the advanced canoe training camp in October. All the participants were eager to try out their skills before the event. To participate in the event, they registered for the weekly advanced training camp to practice and adapt in the hope of successfully completing the race in the final challenge and leaving behind a special memory of Taipei's waterfront experience.

The total distance of this route is 3.5 kilometers. The participants started out in groups and were escorted by teams of water safety guards and onshore ambulance support. The route passes by the Taipei Fine Arts Museum and the Grand Hotel, giving everyone an appreciation of the Keelung River from different angles. During the activity, the team coaches also accompanied the trainees with responding to different conditions such as water currents and wind directions to enable them to put into practice their training. The race ended at the Sanjiaodu Wharf with photoshoots and certificates of completion to remember the event.

Commission Li Tzai-li said that the purpose of progressing from the past general parent-child experience to this year’s advanced "Canoe Advanced Training Camp" is to allow more people to gain a deeper understanding of water sports. The Taipei City Government will continue to develop a greater diversity of water experience by extending the water environment from the land to the suburban waters of Taipei City to drive the vigorous development of water sports.

Theme: 2021 Taipei International Dragon Boat Championships - Held on National Day for the First Time

Thanks to the slowing down of the pandemic, "2021 Taipei International Dragon Boat Championships", the largest dragon boat race in Taiwan, will be held in Dajia Riverside Park on October 9 and 10. This morning (6th), a traditional ceremony of invoking the deities, eye-dotting and river blessing ceremony was held at the Quyuan Temple of Zhoumei village, the only temple in Taiwan that worships Qu Yuan as the main deity. Led by the Mayor of Taipei City Ko Wen-je as chief priest, Commissioner Li, Tzai-Li of Taipei City Government Department of Sports, the dragon boat competition representative teams and guests joined in the worship ceremony. Following ancient rituals, they prayed to the deities for the successful and safe completion of this year’s Taipei Dragon Boat Championships.

Carried out according to ancient Taoist rituals, the blessing ceremony was grand but simple. It kicked off with joyous and festive dragon and lion dances, resounding drums and the folk art performance, Santaizi. Teams of all ages, such as the Zhoumei Heritage Dragon Boat Team, the Taipei Xingfufa Baseball Team, the Olympic Friendship Team, the Dajia Dragon Boat Team, the American Institute in Taiwan and the Taipei Dragon Boat Association, were invited to participate in the traditional ceremony. The gathering of teams from different backgrounds and generations symbolizes the shared guardianship and heritage of the traditional dragon boat culture. At the same time, the competitors also painted and wore statement headband symbolizing "fighting for each other" to demonstrate Taipei's vitality and combat capability.

After the ceremony, the main priest and participating teams moved on to the dragon boat eye-dotting venue at Zhoumei Wharf to begin the eye-dotting and river blessing ceremony. Taipei City Mayor Ke and guests successfully dotted the eyes of six dragon boats, which were then launched into the water for the blessing ceremony. Representatives of the dragon boat teams then rowed from Zhoumei Wharf to Dajia Dragon Boat Wharf for a successful beginning of the upcoming 2020 Taipei Dragon Boat Championships.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic situation in Taiwan has slowed down, the Department of Sports continues to maintain rigorous implementation of high pandemic prevention standard for the dragon boat training and competition. Activities in today's dragon boat eye-dotting ceremony were conducted in accordance with the pandemic prevention measures set out by the Central Epidemic Command Center. Participants in the rituals maintained safe social distancing, and alcohol disinfectant was provided at the site.
