Animal Exchange – The Conservation and Reproduction of White Rhinoceros

On February 20, 2009, the Taipei Zoo made an exchange with the Leofoo Village, swapping nine lemurs for one white rhinoceros.

Presently the Taipei Zoo has one male and five female white rhinoceros. The male that came from the Leofoo Village through this particular exchange is about eight years old. After clearing quarantine, he would first be moved to the exhibit to acclimate the surroundings before it “makes friends” with the Zoo’s twelve year old “Xi-Chun”. Should the matchmaking a success, then there’s another sixteen-month gestation period to wait. The one-birth-per- pregnancy white rhinoceros is an endangered species protected under wildlife conservation; hence the Zoo is trying hard to make a contribution to propagate this species.
