Taipei City Huannan Market (Address: No. 245, Section 2, Huanhe South Road, Wanhua District, Taipei City) commenced the soft opening at 2 AM on February 12. Since 1999, Taipei City Government has spent 18 years pushing for the reconstruction of the Huannan Market. The project was eventually finalized when Mayor Ko Wen-Je came into office. Starting in 2008, the city government has convened over 100 briefing sessions to coordinate and negotiate with the self-governing association, various industry representatives, and vendors. Construction finally began on November 6, 2016, with phase one of the project lasting approximately 3 years. The project was completed recently, and 1,055 vendors from the old Huannan Market moved into phase one of the Huannan Market. Phase 2 of the project is slated for completion in August 2022.
According to the Taipei City Market Administration Office, a new business model and procurement requirement will be introduced to the Huannan Market after reconstruction. In regard to hardware improvements, parking space needs will be taken into consideration by setting aside floors 4 to 6 as a parking lot, offering 740 parking spaces for the shoppers’ convenience. In addition, the vendors in the market are reallocated different areas according to the category to ensure food hygiene and safety. First floor stalls offer mainly vegetables, shellfish, and cold dishes; second floor vendors sell meat, seafood, poultry, dried tofu processed food, hardware, and other food and beverages. Comprehensive policies implemented include vendor management, environmental cleanliness, and keeping litter off the ground in order to offer consumers a clean, comfortable shopping space. Everyone is invited to visit the Huannan Market to experience its brand-new appearance.
